Genuine Briggs and Stratton part: 844385
Flywheel
This genuine Briggs & Stratton flywheel from Briggs Bits is engineered to maintain precise ignition timing, stable crankshaft rotation, and consistent spark delivery across the full operating range of your engine. Manufactured to OEM tolerances.
Most modern flywheels integrate a high-strength steel hub, balanced aluminium rotor, (some are made from cast iron), and correctly polarised magnet assembly to ensure accurate triggering of the ignition coil. This prevents weak spark, misfires, surging, and hard-starting issues commonly caused by worn or damaged flywheels.
On engines equipped with charging alternators, certain flywheel types also incorporate additional magnet pairs positioned around the rotor. These magnets pass over the stators charging coils to generate AC output for battery charging, lighting circuits, and accessory power. The strength, spacing, and polarity of these magnets are critical: any loss of magnetism or physical damage can lead to low charging voltage, intermittent charging, or complete alternator failure.
The flywheel also acts as a rotational mass to smooth engine pulses, reduce vibration, and stabilise idle speed. Its machined keyway ensures correct alignment on the crankshaft taper, protecting against timing drift or sheared keys. Whether youre rebuilding an engine, replacing a damaged unit, or restoring factory-spec performance, this OEM flywheel provides the correct magnetic field strength, inertia, and structural integrity required for reliable operation.
PLEASE NOTE: Attempting to fit the incorrect flywheel can have a dramatic affect on how your engine runs, it also risks causing damage to either the part, or the engine. If you're not sure of the exact part number to suit your engine, refer to the parts list specific to your engines Model, Type and Code numbers, or contact us for assistance.
