A clean oil filter helps keep engine oil free from dirt and debris, allowing your engine to run cooler, smoother, and more efficiently.
This step-by-step guide covers everything from preparation to final checks.
Tools & Materials Needed
- Briggs & Stratton oil filter
- Briggs & Stratton engine oil
- Filter wrench or strap wrench
- Drain pan or oil extraction pump
- Clean rags or paper towels
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Ensure the equipment is on a level, stable surface.
A clean, well-lit workspace makes the job safer and helps prevent contamination.
Step 2: Drain the Engine Oil
Warm the engine
Run the engine briefly so the oil flows more easily.
Turn off the engine.
Disconnect the spark plug wire for safety.
Option A — Draining via Drain Plug.
Place a drain pan beneath the oil drain plug.
Remove the drain plug and allow all oil to drain completely.
Option B — Using an Oil Extraction Pump.
Insert the pump’s suction hose into the dipstick tube, ensuring it reaches the base of the crankcase.
Prime the pump and extract all oil from the engine.
Step 3: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Option A — Using a filter wrench or strap.
Fit the wrench to the oil filter.
Turn counterclockwise to loosen.
Remove the filter by hand and place it in the drain pan.
Option B — Removing by hand.
Grip the filter firmly and rotate counterclockwise.
Be prepared for oil spillage as the filter detaches.
Step 4: Clean the Filter Mounting Area
Wipe the mounting surface to remove any old gasket residue, grime, or debris.
A clean surface ensures a proper seal for the new filter.
Step 5: Install the New Oil Filter
Lightly coat the new filter’s rubber gasket with fresh engine oil.
Screw on the filter by hand until the gasket contacts the engine.
Tighten an additional ½ to ¾ turn — do not overtighten.
Step 6: Refill the Engine with Fresh Oil
Add the correct Briggs & Stratton?recommended oil (commonly SAE30 or 5W?30, depending on temperature).
Check the dipstick regularly while filling to avoid overfilling.
Step 7: Final Checks
Reconnect the spark plug wire.
Start the engine and let it run for 1–2 minutes.
Inspect the area around the oil filter for leaks.
Turn off the engine and recheck the oil level, topping up if necessary.
